Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Personal Reflection

As a designer who loves literature and is interested in learning more about cover design, content design and the publishing industry, this was a project which taught me the importance of importance of bridging content and visual design into one, clearly evoking the feel and themes of the book while sparking intrigue in the audience and letting the work speak for itself.

Binding a Hardcover book

My designs were materialised by printing and hand-binding the book into a hardcover bound book, using saddle-stitch binding and professional printing services.

Convergence onto Art Direction

The final book cover features Alice falling into the rabbit hole, with the colour-blocked swirls and disruptions to her own silhouette figure aligning with the narrative's exploration of disorder and transformation. The back cover extends this concept with the end of the swirl doubling as the Cheshire Cat's grin, evoking a more sinister tone to emphasise the darker themes beneath the tale’s whimsical surface. This modern, minimalistic art direction using black, white, and repetitive shapes aims to reframe the classic tale, inviting readers to view it through a lens that balances its magical allure with its deeper, more enigmatic layers

Art Direction Experimentation

I began my graphic exploration by brainstorming a list of key words that encapsulated the creative direction I aimed to achieve. These words served as guidelines to define the mood, themes, and visual identity I wanted to convey. I then collected precedents that embodied these concepts, providing inspiration and clarity for the project's development.
